The altar-fans on which are represented the Seraphim are held by the deacons over the Holy Gifts during the consecration and over the Gospel book. Earlier they were made of ostrich feathers and were used to keep insects away from the Holy Gifts. Today the wavering of these fans is symbolic and represents the presence of the heavenly hosts during the celebration of the Liturgy.
