Why Is St. Matrona dipicted with eyes open or closed?

Commemorating Uncovering the relics of St. Matrona of Moscow (Mar. 8/Feb. 23)

Why is the Blessed Matrona depicted on some icons with her eyes open, and on others with her eyes closed?

According to Father Daniil Sysoev, the saint is depicted on the icon in a transfigured state,

and therefore without the illnesses that he had during his lifetime.

The Holy Matrona of Moscow was canonized as a locally venerated saint in 1999, and in 2004 a general church glorification of the blessed one took place. Not much time has passed, but a tradition has already developed to depict Saint Matrona as blind, that is, as she was in life. This image is recognizable and loved by believers.

At the same time, an icon is not a portrait. According to the dogma of icon veneration, through the image we touch a transfigured person, a partaker of Divine life. Therefore, saints are written without focusing on physical defects.
