Holy Martyr Seraphim (Zvezdinsky) on the Divine Liturgy:
In the Church we have the hands of Christ, His mouth and His eyes, there is also His Divine heart. His hands are the rites of the Church, the language of the mouth of Christ is the gospel, His eyes are the sacraments through which He looks into our souls. His heart is the Divine Liturgy.
Consider lost the day when you will not hear the liturgy. The Liturgy is a diamond, a wonderful gift from Christ; the liturgy is a refreshing, strengthening river, flowing from the edge of the crucified Jesus; The liturgy is a golden bridge on which only one can come to eternal life with Christ. Love the Divine Liturgy, it is a photograph of the life of Christ, it is full of the deepest meaning, and happy is the one who draws from this source of joy, life and wisdom of Christ.
The Divine Liturgy is the axis of the whole world. As the wheel can only move, having established itself on the axis, so our world, our wheel of life can move, only having the Divine Liturgy, during which the Bloodless Sacrifice is offered.
There is nothing on earth more precious than the Divine Liturgy. If you collect the jewels of the whole world: dig out all the gold, precious stones, remove all the pearls from the bottom of the sea and put them on one side of the scale and on the other side the liturgy, performed by a simple priest in the poorest rural church, then the side with the Divine Liturgy will outweigh.
Were it not for the liturgy, the sun would fade, the earth would cease to produce fruit.
As a mother sometimes leads a child by the hand, sometimes sits around and watches him, and sometimes takes him into her arms, caresses, cherishes and nourishes, so the Lord in all services of church and home prayer as if holding our hand, watches us from afar, and in the Divine Liturgy He takes us into His arms, sets Himself at the table, and eats from His meal. At all services except the liturgy, we speak with the Lord by telephone, communicate with Him by telegraph, and in the Divine Liturgy we directly speak our needs to the Lord face to face, personally thank Him and pray to Him.
The Divine Liturgy is a window cut through by the Lord in a sinful, unbelieving, adulterous world, into which fresh air enters; if this window didn't exist, believers would suffocate.
The cross is our anchor. The cross is our cover. The merits of the godparents, remembered every day at the liturgy, save the world from final destruction.
