Orthodox Parables and Stories: Two safe Guides

The hermit St. Simeon the Old had the divine charisma to command the wildest and fierce beasts!! His gift became known not only to the Christians but also to the Jews.

Once, some Jews set out for a fortress, located far away. But a heavy thunderstorm broke out and they lost their way. They wandered in the wilderness, meeting no village, no cave to protect, not even a passerby to ask where they should go.

Like sailors in a storm, they reached the cave of St. Simeon. The man they saw was skeletal, wearing only a sheepskin. They explained to him what had happened to them, and begged him to show them the way to the fortress.

"Wait and I will quickly give you guides that will show you the way you want," said St. Simeon.
His words relieved the distressed hikers. But with a little surprise and fear they saw two lions appear in front of them. These beasts, however, did not resemble lions which we all know. Their eyes were calm, their tail wagging as pets do when they see their master, and they showed an obedient disposition. They approached St. Simeon and he, in a sense, ordered them to guide his guests to their destination.

The Jews, admiring what they had seen and heard, thanked the Saint and followed the obedient lions.
