The Elder said:

I once saw my dream come true: I was walking in the woods. And there, in front of me, is a tree trunk. I sat quietly on top of it. Suddenly I felt the trunk moving. I'm jumping up. And I see a huge snake. I run away. After coming out of the forest I look back and see the forest in flames. And in the middle of the fire, the snake curled up. Thank God, I exclaimed, that I made it out. What awaits me if I stay in the woods!
For a long time I couldn't figure out what the dream meant. Until one day, an elder explained it to me:
"Forest" is the world. People who live in the world sin without any sense of sin. There are all evils in the world: arrogance, prostitution, flattery, theft. And you once lived like that, without ever thinking anything different.

Suddenly, I realized how if I continued to live as I was then, I would lose. Once and for all. Because, after death, there is only life for the righteous. Their sinners await endless suffering. So when I saw the beast moving, I realized that it was now dangerous to stay seated on it. So when I left the world and looked at it from the monastery, I saw how the whole world was burning in its passions. This is the "violent arson" that Saint Andrew mentions in his Great Canon.
