Orthodox Parables and Stories: Work and Pray
Once, an old boatman was riding a boat with a young man. On one pad he had the word 'prayer" written and on the other the word 'work'. The young man noticed this and smiled ironically.
"Grandpa," he says "you're going too slow. Anyone who works does not need to pray."
The Elder did not reply. He just left the paddle with the word 'prayer' and continued to paddle with the other one with the writing 'work'. But soon they realized, the boat was now not moving at all. It was always in the same place.
This has enabled the young man to understand a great truth, that along with work, prayer is needed in order for work and man to truly prosper.
