The icon began to be considered miraculous due to one case. According to legend, many years ago, pirates broke into the island. It so happened that on that day almost the entire male population went to the mountains, and the nuns who lived there were not worth hoping for any protection. The pirates were already breaking through the door, plotting violent acts. Then the desperate nuns stood in front of the icon of the Mother of God and began to pray for help. When the pirates burst in, they saw only a bunch of snakes, where the nuns had been, so no one understood.
Since then, on the feast of the Assumption of the Mother of God, absolutely identical snakes crawl into the temple and, like tame ones, crawl around the icon and people, without causing any harm. Where they come from and where they disappear, no one knows. The French scientists who arrived could not determine what kind of snakes they belong to.
On this day, these poisonous guests do not sting people who take them in their hands, absolutely not afraid, and even put them on their neck and face. Snakes crawl everywhere in the temple, but are especially drawn to the Panagia Fedousa icon. Children play with snakes without any fear. Local residents are so accustomed to such "parishioners" on this holiday that they absolutely do not respond to them.
Soon after the end of the festive service, the snakes crawl with the icon of the Virgin Mary they love and leave the church. As soon as they crawl along the road and find themselves in the mountains, they are transformed again. Now, if you approach them, they will hiss right away and they can bite!
This phenomenon, like blooming lilies, has been repeatedly recorded on video and cameras, but anyone who sees it with their own eyes is simply amazed.
