I saw people who came to the monastery good, but then soured; I saw those who came bad, and then became humble and meek, so the soul rejoices to look at them. I know one monk who, when he was young, walked around the village in order not to be tempted, and recently he had been staring at the world for two hours, and he told me that he loved the world. In this way the soul of a monk can change and turn to the world. But he came to the monastery at the age of seventeen and lived in the monastery for 35 years. This shows how to be afraid so that the fire that made us leave the world and love the Lord does not go out. - St. Silouan of Mt Athos
