What the Orthodox Church thinks about Halloween

A person is known by deeds, and a holiday by spirit. If a holiday brings joy and peace, and the traditions associated with it bring good and warmth to the hearts of people, then this is a sure sign of correctness and necessity. Otherwise, it’s nothing but a bright performance, and you can’t call such a masquerade a holiday, it’s a false holiday.

This is precisely the situation that arose with Halloween, which came into our lives: a dubious story with unkind characters, bearing no sense or joy, popularizing evil spirits. The main themes of Halloween are evil spirits, death, occultism and monsters. Paganism in its purest form. But people unsuccessfully try to find the "highest" meaning in Halloween and even attribute to it near-Christian motives. In fact, many fell for the bait of dealers who introduced fashion for Halloween paraphernalia and earn money on it.

The main goal of any Christian holiday is the message of Christ. If there is no Good News, then it has nothing to do with Christian traditions. And with such false holidays, one must be extremely careful. Flirting with evil spirits will not lead to anything good. This is extremely dangerous for the spiritual life. However, as well as participation in any pagan festivities.

A spiritual downfall may be invisible at first, you think, a little distracted. But a small distraction from the main road can lead to fatal consequences: the loss of the main landmark and the descent from the right path. This will be followed by wandering in the dark. And they can become endless, for life. Dark forces do not just let go of a person, but hold him by all the hooks. Therefore, it is so important to adhere to Truth even in seeming trifles and not to leave the right road under any pretext.

Metropolitan Anthony (Pakanich)
