Orthodox Parables and Stories: St. Paisios and the bear
Elder Paisios went to the Monastery one day with a loaded donkey. Crossing a narrow path he met a bear, which often made her appearance there. The animal was pulled aside for the elder to pass. But he made a sign for the bear to pass first. Then the bear reached out her paw and grabbed his hand, as if trying to tell him that he had to go first.
"Tomorrow, don't come down here, because I'm waiting for people" the Elder said. "Otherwise, I'll grab you by the ear and tie you in the crib."
And really, the other day the bear didn't show up. This bear was soon acquainted with him and the Elder was feeding her. But on the days when people were coming to the Monastery, he warned her not to appear and cause fear to the people.
