Orthodox Parables and Stories: Miracle phone call
The Gerontissa [Gerontissa Pavlina, Abbess, then of the Holy Trinity Monastery in Plateia Thebes] greatly appreciated the Elder [Elder Joseph of Vatopedi] and consulted him almost daily by telephone.
In the winter of 1990 or 1991, a lot of snow had fallen at the monastery, and at some point telephone cable had been cut.
The sisters were shut in, unable to go anywhere because of the snow, or to alert anyone because of telephone interruption; at that time mobile phones had not invaded our lives.
Then, as the Abbess told me, the Elder phoned them. The sisters were surprised when they heard the ringing of the phone because they knew about the cut cable.
The Elder spoke with Gerontissa for some time, comforted her, and strengthened her in this ordeal.
When the conversation ended, the sisters tried to call someone in vain.
Two or three days after the bad weather broke, the telephone crew came and repaired the damage.
