St. Maximus the Confessor

People seek money, not for its practical usefulness, but because with it they can become slaves to pleasure.

Three reasons for the love of money are pleasure, conceit, and lack of faith. Hedonists love money to spend it n their pleasures, the conceited want it to procure fame, those who are lacking in faith seek money to keep it hidden away out of fear of starvation, old age, or illness. The latter put their trust in their money rather than in God the creator of the universe, whose providence knows no bounds and reaches even the lowest of his creatures.

But there are four kinds of people who put money aside. I have just mentioned three. There are, however, also those who restrict themselves to the administration of goods. Only these last are justified in accumulating money, on the assumption that their aim is to be always in the business of helping the needy.
