The Entrance of the Most Holy Theotokos into the Temple (Dec. 4/Nov. 21)

The parents of the Most Holy Theotokos Joachim and Anna vowed to consecrate their daughter to God even before Her birth. When the Blessed Virgin was three years old, they fulfilled their promise. A solemn procession with the singing of sacred songs went to the Jerusalem temple; Maria was accompanied by other girls. Near the temple, the Virgin was met by the high priest Zacharias (later the father of John the Baptist) and many priests.
Without the help of adults, little Mary ascended the fifteen high steps leading to the temple. By a special inspiration from God, Zachariah led the Blessed Virgin into the most important place of the church - the Holy of Holies. The sanctity of this place was such that only once a year the high priest entered it. All those present marveled at the extraordinary event. Righteous Joachim and Anna, having entrusted the Child to the will of the Heavenly Father, returned home.
The Most Blessed Young Lady remained at the temple where the consecrated to God stayed. Young Mary spent her time in prayer, comprehension of Scripture, and handicrafts. Since She wished to consecrate Her virginity to God, when She was 14 years old, Zechariah gave Her to the righteous elder Joseph. In his house, the Archangel Gabriel announced to the Virgin about the birth of Her Savior.
The introduction into the temple of the Most Holy Theotokos gives us the opportunity to vividly feel the close coming into the world of Jesus Christ. As it is written in the Scriptures that He is not yet visible, but His presence is already close, His rays are already shining ...
Troparion of the feast
Today is the prelude of God's good will and the proclamation of the salvation of men. The Virgin hath manifestly appeared in the temple of God and proclaimeth Christ unto all. To her let us cry aloud:/ Rejoice, O thou fulfillment of the Creator's dispensation!
We magnify Thee, O Most-holy Virgin, God-chosen Maiden, and we honor Thine Entry into the Temple of the Lord.
MOTHER OF GOD, SAVE US!
