On the second, third, fourth and fifth Sundays of Lent in the evenings Vespers are performed in many Orthodox churches, with the reading of the Akathist to the Passion of Christ. This Orthodox service was compiled in the middle of the 17th century by Metropolitan Peter of Kiev (Mogila), the creator of many liturgical forms. Initially, passions were common in the southern regions of Russia, but by the twentieth century they began to be carried out everywhere. During the service the following Gospel readings are read:
- on the first - 26 and 27 chapters from Matthew;
- on the second - 14 and 15 from Mark;
- on the third - 22 and 23 from Luke;
- on the fourth 18 and 19 of John.
By tradition, during the reading of the Gospel, the worshipers stand with lighted candles in their hands.
