Monk Parthenios of Kiev left us this account of a change in the fate of the deceased, for whom he read the Gospel: "Once, during forty days I was reading the Gospel about the salvation of one soul who did good to me, and behold, in a dream I see a field covered with thorns. Suddenly a fire from heaven falls, burns the thorns that cover the field, and the field remains clean. Puzzled by this vision, I hear a voice: The thorns that cover the field are the sins of the soul which you have benefited; the fire that has consumed it is the Word of God, which you read for her.
