"He goes before them" (John 10:4)

As we look at the good Shepherd walking ahead, let us remember that He sees and knows before us all that awaits us in life. With the eyes of faith we will always see His holy image ahead of us, smoothing out the rough edges of the path, averting danger, guarding us with His presence.

How comforting to know that He Himself has gone through all that we are destined to experience, has experienced all our sufferings and has borne our diseases, which cannot destroy us any longer. It is as if He is making a way for us through a dense forest, over seemingly insurmountable rocks, past an abyss, and we only have to follow Him obediently!

This is the meaning of the blessed human condition: without anxiously looking ahead, without fearing for the next step, without choosing our own path, without laying upon ourselves in advance the burden of future calamities, without fear, with firm faith to follow the Shepherd calmly, step by step, rejoicing and remembering always that "He goes before them.
