St. Jacob was a native of the Aleutian Islands who became a priest of the Orthodox Church and continued the missionary work of St. Innocent among his and other Alaskan people. He served the sick even while barely well enough to care for himself. He was a gifted storyteller, who created an alphabet for the people of Atka so they could learn to read the Gospels & the services.
Righteous Father Jacob, / adornment of Atka and the Yukon delta, / offspring of Russian America, / flower of brotherly unity, / healer of sickness, / and terror of demons, / you offered yourself as a living sacrifice / to bring light to a searching people. / Pray to Christ God that our souls may be saved!
