A monk who wanted to become a hermit went and found a great abbot of the desert and said to him: "Father, tell me a word from the Holy Spirit how to be saved."
And the old man answered: "Look, go to your house and if you are hungry, eat.
If you're thirsty, drink.
If you are sleepy, sleep.
Only in your heart should you always have the word of the publican and the morals of the publican: "God, have mercy on me the sinner."
The man who has actually reached this state of the publican's morals, that man has already entered the Kingdom of God. This man found the purpose of the Gospel, he found the purpose of God's commandments.
He also achieved the purpose for which God himself became man for us.
