St. Nicholas of Japan

In his early days of studying Japanese, St Nicholas of Japan (then a priest) would go with the Japanese children to school to learn Japanese as best as he could with them.

Indeed at one point, the perplexed teachers put a sign at the door: “The bearded foreigner is not allowed”.
