Do not beat animals.

Do not breathe in malice, vengeance, even killing animals, so that your own soul is not put to death by a spiritual enemy, breathing in you with anger even on wordless creatures, and so you don’t get used to breathing anger and vengeance on people. Remember that animals are called to life by the goodness of the Lord so that they can taste as much as possible in the short term of life of the joys of Being. The Lord is good to all (Psalm 144: 9).
Do not beat them if they are unwise, and they will punish or suffer any of your property. Blessed is the cattle, too.
St. John of Kronstadt
