Someone asked the elder:
"Why do not today's ascetics receive
gifts of grace, like the ancients?"
The elder replied: "Because then there was love,
and each lifted his neighbor upward;
now love has cooled, and each draws his neighbor downward.
For this reason, we do not deserve to receive grace."
