Akathist to the Transfiguration of the Lord (Amateur Translation)

O chosen Leader and King of glory, Thou Creator of heaven and earth, beholding on Mount Tabor the transfigured with glory, all the whole creation marveled, the heavens trembled, and all the peoples of the earth rejoiced; but we who are unworthy of Your Transfiguration for our sake, thankfully worshiping it, with Peter we cry to You from our hearts:

Jesus, Eternal God, it is good for us to always be under the shelter of Your grace.

Ikos 1

Thy Godhead, Thy Lightgiver Christ, unsearchable by angels and unapproachable by man, Thy Godhead, revealed by the lightning and rays of Thy eternal Light on the Mount of Tabor, to Thy chief disciples, and they were changed with divine horror, shining with a cloud of light, and hearing the voice of the Father, understood the mystery of Thy Incarnation, crying out to Thee thus:

Jesus, Immortal Son of God, enlighten us with the light of Your radiant Face.

Jesus, Good God Almighty, awaken us sleeping from the depths of the darkness of sinful sleep.

Jesus, unapproachable in the living light, lead us out of the dark realm.

Jesus, filling the whole world with Your glory, lead us into the abode of paradise.

Jesus, Light of the world, free us from the evil world in the darkness of those who sit.

Jesus, Sun of Truth, clothe us with strength and righteousness, in the shadow of death sleeping.

Jesus, Eternal God, it is good for us to always be under the shelter of Your grace.

Kontakion 2

Seeing that Your disciples, O Lord, who are still unenlightened, do not understand that it is fitting for You to go to Jerusalem and there suffer much and be killed, You began therefore to tell them, that it is Your will that they should endure all these things for our salvation. For this reason, after the days of the sixth year, Thou hast begotten Peter, James and John, and hast taken them up to Mount Tabor to show them Thy Divine Glory before the Cross, that even during Thy sufferings they may sing to Thee intelligently: Alleluia.

Ikos 2

Thy disciples, O Lord, do not understand the unreasonableness of Thy free suffering. For this reason, before Thy Cross, Thou didst lead Thy best disciples up into the high mountain by night, that they might see the wonder of Thy terrible Transfiguration and the intolerable divine splendor of Thy divine coming from afar, so that when they see Thee crucified, they might understand Thy suffering freely. For this cause we cry unto Thee thus:

O Jesus, who hast led Thy disciples up from the hill to the high mountain, lead us also up to the mountain, that we may learn to seek the pleasures of the high places.

Jesus, from the cares of life and the multitude of the people, wean Peter and Zebedee, wean our minds from earthly goods, that we may learn to avoid the pleasures of the world.

O Jesus, who by many labors lifted up his friends to a great height, and taught us by many labors and sweat to ascend all the days.

O Jesus, who in the silence of night prayer Thy Transfiguration Thou hast shown to Thy disciples, and now to Thy faithful ones may Thy sweetness of Thy words enlighten them in the night.

O Jesus, who hast revealed three witnesses of Thy glory in the silence of Tabor, and now to those who are silent and desolate let them always behold Thy glory.

O Jesus, O Tabor and Hermon, who rejoiced in Thy Name, grant that by the invocation of Thy sweetest Name we may make the mountain rise.

O Jesus, eternal God, it is good for us always to be under the shelter of Thy grace.

Kontakion 3

By the power from on high Thy chosen Apostles, O Jesus, who by Thy power have clothed themselves on Tabor, that they may learn to seek the highest things and to think in the highest, and not in earthly things, clothe us also, who are downcast and always overcome by the weakness of the flesh, with Thy power and glory, that Thy power may be made perfect in our weakness, for whose sake we shall sing to Thee with love: Alleluia.

Ikos 3

Having before the Cross and Thy free suffering to reveal to the disciples part of the Godhead Thy glory, O Christ our Savior, Thou didst choose three only from those who dwell on the earth, that they might be beholders of Thy divine glory; for these three before Thy eyes were better than all nations and tongues: Peter, who loved Thee above all others, and was the first of all to confess the Son of God to Thee; James, who was the first in the Apostles to bow his head under the sword for the hope of future blessings, and so began Thy martyrs; John, who was a virgin, and more than all others to preserve chastely the purity of flesh and spirit, and for this reason received special grace above all others to behold Thy inexpressible revelations and Divine Glory. With them also receive from us these praises:

O Jesus, who received the confession of faith from Peter before your Transfiguration, accept my warm confession.

O Jesus, who to the same Peter on Tabor gave the same boldness to speak with You, speak good and peace in my heart.

O Jesus, Thou callest the sons of Zebedee, because of the flame of their love, the sons of thunder; do not strike me with the thunder of Thy wrath.

O Jesus, who by the same disciples did not allow fire to come down from heaven upon the Samaritans, quench not the fire of the passions in me.

O Jesus, with the virgin John, in purity of flesh and spirit, bring me up to Mount Tabor.

O Jesus, with the courageous James, who first drank Your cup, lead me into paradise.

O Jesus, O eternal God, it is good for us always to be under the shelter of your grace.

Kontakion 4

The storm of Thy Epiphany was on Mount Sinai, when in thunder and lightning Thou didst give the law to Thy favored one Moses; likewise also on Mount Horeb there was a strong spirit on the mountain, ravaging the mountains, cowardice and fire, when Elijah the prophet sought to see Thee, But it was not in the tempest, nor in cowardice, nor in fire, O Lord, but in the voice of the cold that Thou didst show them Thy face and the glory of Thy Godhead, when Thou didst appear unto them on Mount Tabor, and they cried unto Thee with joy: Alleluia.

Ikos 4

When Moses and Elijah heard Thy words on Tabor about Thy Exodus, which Thou wilt bring to an end in Jerusalem, they were Thy witnesses to the whole world, O Lord, that Thou art indeed the Son of God for the salvation of men, sent from God the Father and revealed by a voice from heaven. For Moses was called from the dead, that he might bear witness to Your coming into the world to those who are in hell. And Elijah was called from heaven, that he might tell Enoch Thy glory seen in the Transfiguration of Thy Immaculate Flesh. But we, who marvel at the mystery of Your prophet's appearance on Tabor, call to You with compassion:

O Jesus, to Moses, the God-seer, who saw Thy Face, who wished to behold Thy Face, appearing face to face on Tabor, show us in the age to come the sweetness of Thy Face, which is delightful.

O Jesus, who in the vision of Thy backward eyes didst show unto Moses the radiance of Thy glory, show us in Thy kingdom, with Thy face to the face of Thy sight, the inexpressible goodness of Thy sight.

O Jesus, Who guided Elijah in the silence and voice of the cold by Thy revelation, guide me wonderfully in the silence of the passionlessness of the divine.

O Jesus, on the fiery chariot of fire Thou didst bring Thy heavenly host Elijah into paradise, bring me marvelously to the height of the most perfect life.

O Jesus, who of old spoke with the prophets in manifold ways, and on Tabor proclaimed to them His exodus, feed my thirsty soul with the words of eternal life.

O Jesus, who at the mouth of two witnesses revealed the mystery of the Transfiguration to Your disciples, inflame my cold faith with the unexpressed sighs of the Holy Spirit.

O Jesus, eternal God, it is good for us always to be under the shelter of your grace.

Kontakion 5
O Lord, O Lightbearer, the inexpressible illumination of Thy Immaculate Flesh, when, as a disciple sleeping and the night already approaching morning, Thou didst offer Thy prayer to Thy Father on the heights of the mountain. Then Thy face was enlightened like the sun, and Thy garments were shining, white as snow. But the apostles were awakened by the divine power they had found, and saw Your glory, as the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth, and stood trembling, singing to You: Alleluia.

Ikos 5
When the Apostles saw Thee on Tabor in the form of a human being, transfigured by the Divine glory, and conversing with Moses and Elijah about Thy Exodus, they understood Thy essential power and the Godhead under the covering of flesh, and were horrified, listening to those who spoke and enjoying the sight of Thy Divine glory, which they saw as much as their eyes could contain. With them we also sing to Thee these words:

O Jesus, who hast shone upon Thy disciples Thy ineffable and God-glorious Glory, shine in our souls Thy everlasting Light.

O Jesus, who hast communed with the chiefs of law and grace of Thy immaculate Light, by the communion of that Light gather our minds, which are in a state of forgetfulness.

O Jesus, Thou that hidest in the flesh the lightning of Thy Godhead on Tabor, bare the hidden sins in my poor conscience,

O Jesus, Who illumined the Holy Mountain with the rays of Thy uncreated Light from Thy Flesh, illumine the light of Thy commandments in my darkened soul.

O Jesus, who by the Transfiguration of Thy flesh enlightened the ends of the world, enlighten and beautify us who are darkened.

O Jesus, who by the splendor of Thy Light from Tabor cleansed Thy disciples like snow, cleanse and renew us who are darkened.

O Jesus, eternal God, it is good for us always to be under the shelter of your grace.

Kontakion 6
Seeing Thy most gracious and saving conversation, Christ our God, with Moses and Elijah on Mount Taborstey, Thy disciples rejoiced zealously: Peter, James and John. Peter, in a divine voice filled with love, said: “Lord, it is good for us to be here: if you want, we will create three canopies here, one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” But we are unworthy, we do not dare to directly ask You, but both humbly pray for mercy to Thee and with a trembling voice cry out to Thee: Alleluia.

Ikos 6
When the cloud of light appeared on Tabor as a sign to the whole universe, and Peter inquired, announcing the revelation of the Father's voice and the coming of the Holy Spirit, and when the apostles were at the top of the mountain, they were more afraid, and entered the cloud with fear, and perceived Thy unapproachable Godhead, and with boldness cried out to Thee in many ways:

O Jesus, Who guided Israel by the pillar of cloud in the wilderness of old, show us the way to Thy kingdom even now.

O Jesus, who in the cloud of light on Tabor You overshadowed Your Apostles, with the dew of Your Holy Spirit overshadow us.

O Jesus, in the temple not made with hands, Thou who livest in heaven, show me the temple of light and the shadow of Thy Godhead.

O Jesus, Thou wilt not want man-made tabernacles on earth, but an inward tabernacle of Thy Spirit, in order that I may ascend into heaven.

O Jesus, clothed with light like a garment, clothe me naked in godly garments of chastity and purity.

O Jesus, Who stretched out the heavens like a skin, clothe me clothed in the snowy garments of Your heavenly beauty.

O Jesus, eternal God, it is good for us always to be under the shelter of your grace.

Kontakion 7
Though Heavenly Father, as before at the Jordan at the time of Thy Baptism, has again revealed the hidden mystery of Thy Godhead, as He did at the time of Thy Baptism, Thy Godhead, and with such a voice from the cloud testified, saying, "This is My beloved Son, listen to Him. But the apostles, out of great terror, having lost their strength, fell down on the ground, crying out to You, "Alleluia.

Ikos 7
Having seen the new and glorious things that were on Tabor, Thy word, O Lord God, the self-seers and servants, and hearing the Father's voice and the noise from the cloud, were horrified and were suddenly illumined with a new light, seeing one another, marveling and falling down to the ground, they worshiped Thee, Lord of all, praising Thee in these ways:

O Jesus, O Image of the Blessed Hypostasis of the Father, transform my dark and unclean life.

O Jesus, Radiance of the Glory of the Father, enlighten my fallen and darkened soul.

O Jesus, marvelous and terrible in the glory of Thy divine sight, renew our souls' eyes, which have been corrupted by corruption.

O quiet Jesus, full of love, by the inexpressible light of Thy Flesh, wash away all the filthiness of my flesh more than snow.

O Jesus, Light Infinite, in Thy light, on Tabor revealed, show us the light of the Father.

O Jesus, O unchangeable Light, in the invisible Light of Thy kingdom, show us the Light and the Spirit.

Jesus, eternal God, it is good for us always to be under the shelter of your grace.

Kontakion 8
Wonderfully and strangely did Moses and Elijah appear to Thee on Tabor, O Lord God, seeing the inscription of the Divine Hypostasis, and speaking of Thy free suffering, standing before Thee in holy splendor. But when they were overshadowed by a cloud of light and a voice from heaven, the Glory of the Lord arose from the vision of Thy disciples, and the prophets also took their places, singing to Thee: Alleluia.

Thou wast all from above, O uncountable Word of God, when Thy pure Flesh was transfigured on Tabor, but Thou didst not depart from below, when, as a departed prophet, and seeing Thou had already passed away, Thou came unto Thy disciples lying on the earth for fear's sake, and touching them with Thy hand, Thou said unto them, "Arise, fear not". But when the disciples lifted up their eyes and saw no one but You who are One with them, they rejoiced greatly and gave thanks to God, singing to You these words:

Jesus, who hath the words of the eternal life, abide with us always in our earthly journey.

Kontakion 9
All nature was troubled at the sight of Your glorious Transfiguration on Tabor, O Christ the Savior: The angels, unseen, serving You with fear and trembling, the heavens were afraid, the whole earth moved and trembled, seeing the glory of the Lord, "Mount Tabor, formerly dark and smoky," was covered with a bright cloud, "And Thy disciples, O Lord, who could not bear to see Thy intolerable sight, cast themselves down to the ground, covering their faces, until Thou Thyself, when the vision was ended, raised me up, we who cry unto Thee: Alleluia.

Ikos 9
O Lord, the witches of superstition, unenlightened by grace, cannot understand Your glorious mystery of the Transfiguration. For this reason, when Thou didst go down from the mountain with Thy disciples, when the day began to shine, Thou commandedst Thy friends, that no one should know the vision of what had happened, until after Thou had accepted suffering and death, when Thou didst rise again on the third day from the tomb. And they kept silence, and told no one in those days anything of those things which they had seen and heard, but in their hearts they cried unto Thee this:

O Jesus, who in all Adam was clothed, enlighten man's old blackened nature.

O Jesus, in the cloud, fire and gloom, carried in the cloud, through Your light all the darkness of the soul in us is consumed.

O Jesus, by the radiance of the divine noise of Thy apostles Thou didst delight us always with the words of Thy divine revelation.

O Jesus, enlightening Your disciples with a dewy cloud, enlighten us always with the dawn of Your glorious Transfiguration.

O Jesus, sanctifying the Mount of Tabor with Your pure feet, guide our feet to Your service.

O Jesus, who commanded us to ascend Thy mountain with innocent hands, stir up our hands to pray on the mountain.

O Jesus, O eternal God, it is good for us always to be under the shelter of your grace.

Kontakion 10
O Lord, who would save the world, on Tabor Thou wast transfigured for our sake, that Thou mightest make us worthy of the heavenly glory prepared for Thy elect, and that Thou mightest transform the body of our humility, that it may be conformed to the body of Thy glory in the general resurrection of all, and in Thy infinite kingdom, which Thou hast prepared from the foundation of the world for those who love Thee; in it may Thou also grant us, as Moses and Elijah did on Tabor, to behold Thee face to face, and with all the saints to sing Thy eternal song: Alleluia.

Ikos 10
O eternal King! You do all things for our salvation. For my sake you took pure flesh from the Blessed Virgin Mary, and in the sight of a slave you came into this world. In the same way You were transfigured on the holy mountain, not to please Yourself, for the Light does not require enlightenment, but for the sake of us who are condemned, that You may enlighten the darkness and transform us, who sit in darkness and in the midst of the shadow of death, from sons of wrath into Your beloved children. For this cause we cry to Thee with thanksgiving these things:

O Jesus, O thou who didst transfigure the sight of heaven on Tabor, that we may be made children of God from slaves of sin.

O Jesus, who even to the flesh wasted Thyself, that our fallen nature might be transformed with Thyself.

O Jesus, who hast revealed the unspeakable splendor of Thy kingdom on Tabor, establish in us the joy, peace, and truth of the Holy Spirit.

O Jesus, by the divine splendor of Thy flesh Thou didst deify all creation, and by the deification of the flesh at Thy Second Coming renew us.

O Jesus, who hast revealed the fire of Thy Godhead on Tabor, by the fire of immaterial fire my sins have fallen.

O Jesus, who hast nourished Thy disciples with Thy sweetest conversation, sanctify my soul with Thy Holy Mysteries.

O Jesus, O eternal God, it is good for us always to be under the shelter of your grace.

Kontakion 11
I offer You, O unworthy one, a humble chant, making light of Your Transfiguration, and cry to You, "Grant to Your servants the height of Your heavenly life and the divine radiance of Your eternal glory; but with a pure heart enable us to call up mentally to Your holy mountain, to see Your glorious Transfiguration with our senses, that we may sing to You in light: Alleluia.

Ikos 11
Thy Light Thou didst bring into the world, when with Thy pure flesh Thou didst go up to Mount Tabor, and there Thou didst manifest the Uncreated and Divine Light to Thy disciples, showing the image of the Glory of the Father. We who desire to be partakers of this natural Light of Yours, from the depths of our souls cry to Thee these words:

O Jesus Christ the True Light, live my soul with good thoughts all the days of my earthly journey.

O Jesus, O King, the Primordial Light, rekindle the faded lamp of my soul to the day of my end.

O Jesus, O Silent Light, give life, give light and life to my soul in the hour of my terrible death.

O Jesus, O Holy Light, shining and burning, take me out of the unquenchable fire and darkness.

O Jesus, Most Sweet and Most Holy Light, lead me to the light of Thy heavenly hall in the midst of the bitter ordeals of the air.

O Jesus, most Luminous Light of all the sun, enlighten me in the brightness of Thy holy saints in the unsearchable day of Thy kingdom.

O Jesus, O eternal God, it is good for us always to be under the shelter of Thy grace.

Kontakion 12
Grant me Thy grace, O Jesus my God, which Thou didst grant on Tabor to Thy chosen disciples Peter, John and James, and receive us like them, that we may be clothed with Thy power from above and enlightened by the Holy Spirit, having a pure heart and a renewed spirit, let us ascend to the mental Tabor, ascending from strength to strength, especially in fasting and prayer, and in chastity and purity, and therein let us sing unto Thee: Alleluia.

Ikos 12
Singing of the glorious Transfiguration of Thy Immaculate Flesh, we glorify Thy Divine Glory on Tabor, we worship Thy essential Power and Divinity, which Thou didst unveil there, O Christ, and we believe with Peter, that Thou art indeed the Christ, the Son of the Living God, who came into the world to save sinners, and we cry with him from the depths of our souls, "It is good for us to be here with Thee. For this cause do not shame us who believe in You rightly, but who are weak and fleshly, and cover us with the Light of Your God-bearing Flesh, with love we call to You in this way:

O Jesus, the Sun, the Sun that does not go down, which has risen on Tabor. With Your divine radiance shine upon me,

O Jesus, O unconcealed Light manifested in the Transfiguration, warm me with Your grace through Your communion.

O Jesus, O Prelate Temple of the heavenly Jerusalem, into the tabernacle of God with men enfold me.

O Jesus, O fragrant flower of the Most Holy Paradise, perfume me with the heavenly aromas of holiness and purity.

O Jesus, O cleansing Fire, who cleansest heaven and earth from all filth, purify me from the filth of the flesh and spirit.

O Jesus, O Stone of all-suffering, who instead of the sun has illumined Mount Zion with divine beauty, deliver me from the sight of other beauties rather than Thee.

O Jesus, eternal God, it is good for us always to be under the shelter of Thy grace.

Kondak 13
Oh, Sweet and All-Generous Jesus, shining with divine glory on Tabor! Now accept this little prayer of ours, and as if you received worship from Your disciples on the holy mountain, so vouchsafe us to worship Your glorious Transfiguration, shining in the light of good deeds, may the sinful darkness living in us be enlightened by You, and may we appear worthy of being the heirs of the infinite Thy kingdom in heaven, where with all the saints, vouchsafe us to sing to you: Alleluia. (Thrice).

[This kontakion is spoken three times.]
[Then we repeat the 1st ikos and kontakion:]

O Jesus, who satisfies us with the sight of Your divinity, do not leave us weak in Your service.

O Jesus, who before the Cross made clear the mystery of Thy free suffering, grant that we may always remember Thy exhaustion for our sake.

O Jesus, before Thy death Thou didst show us Thy glory, let us always understand Thy Flesh's deification.

O Jesus, O image of the eternal Being, renew in my soul the image and likeness of Thy desirable sight.

O Jesus, seal of the Father's equal, seal in my flesh Thy ineffable goodness and goodness.

O Jesus, eternal God, it is good for us always to be under the shelter of your grace.

Prayer to the Transfiguration of the Lord
O Lord Jesus Christ our God, in the unapproachable living Light, who is the radiance of the Glory of the Father and the image of His hypostasis! When the fulfillment of time came, You for Your inexpressible mercy to the fallen human race, You diminished Yourself, You took the form of a slave, You humbled Yourself, You were obedient even unto death. But before the Cross and Thy free Passion on the Mount of Tabor You were transfigured in Thy Divine Glory before Thy holy disciples and Apostles, hiding a little the perception of the flesh, so that when they see Thee crucified and put to death, they may understand Thy free suffering and Divinity. Grant that we all, too, who celebrate the Transfiguration of Thy Immaculate Flesh, with pure hearts and undefiled minds may go up to Thy Holy Mountain, to the villages of Thy holy glory, where the voice of those who celebrate is pure, the voice of unspeakable joy, that therein we may face to face with them and behold Thy Glory in the eternal day of Thy Kingdom, and with all the saints who have pleased Thee from all eternity, we may glorify Thy Most Holy Name with Thy Immaculate Father and Thy Most Holy and Good and Life-Giving Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages.
