St. Peter of Damascene

Everything in this life is twofold: action and knowledge, choice and grace, fear and hope, struggles and prizes.

The latter, however, does not occur before the former. It may seem so, but this is a fallacy.

Just as he who does not know about agriculture, when he sees the flowers, mistaking them for fruits, he rushes to pick them, and does not know that in this way he destroys the fruit, so also here; thinking one is something does not allow one to become what one thinks, says Saint Neilus.

That is why one must stay close to God and do everything with discernment.
